HI!! I’m Yzella, the fibre artist behind Yarn Piskie! Growing up in Cornwall, I was lucky to be surrounded by the folklore that flows through our rugged coastline and verdant landscapes. One such tale described the faery folk known to locals as Piskies, that are both playful and often mischievous, leading travellers astray. Yet, the notion of carrying a Cornish Piskie with you is one of great luck, and it’s a story that I’ve always loved. Therefore, when thinking of how I could represent myself within my art, it only made sense to include such a myth.
I have always enjoyed the creative practise, having focused on mixed media photography throughout my education, however I didn’t properly discover fibre arts until my early 20s; it was a calling to knitting that sparked my interest, quickly followed by a fascination of hand spinners and their craft. Eventually, I took the plunge to learn how to spin for myself when I was encouraged and inspired by fellow fibre artists within my close family and friend circle. Since then, I have fallen deep into a love of fibre crafts, from knitting and spinning, to natural dyeing, felting and upcyling.
As of now, Yarn Piskie involves just myself and my rackety wheel, dyeing, carding and spinning each hand made skein from my home. It’s a process that I adore, and I hope you enjoy seeing the things I create!
So, since you’ve found your way here, let yourself be Piskie-led, you never know what you might stumble upon.
